About The Rose Cove
What is The Rose Cove?
The Rose Cove is a farm-based nursery in Oxford, North Carolina with a slightly different approach to buying plants.
We grow premium roses here on our farm and also work with trusted community growers to offer a broader selection of perennials, native plants, and seasonal garden favorites.
Rather than operating as a traditional walk-in retail nursery, our collections are offered online through TheRoseCoveNursery.com. Customers can browse and order from home, then choose scheduled pickup or local delivery within our service area.
This model allows us to focus on growing well, working with growers who know their plants, and offering a wider variety without relying on a traditional retail storefront.
In short, The Rose Cove brings together farm-grown roses, locally grown plants, and carefully selected grower partnerships in one convenient online nursery experience.
Are you a public garden?
Not quite! Despite the name, The Rose Cove is a plant nursery, not a public botanical garden.
We grow and sell roses from our farm in Oxford, NC, with local pickup and delivery options.
Do you grow all of your plants?
Our roses in the Rose Cove Grown collection are grown and cared for here on our farm.
Our Locally Grown Favorites collection allows us to offer an even broader selection of perennials, native plants, seasonal favorites, and other garden-worthy finds sourced from trusted growers in our area.
We love being able to grow what we do well while also supporting other small and local growers.
Roses
What types of roses do you carry?
Roses are the heart of The Rose Cove.
Our collection includes a mix of English-style roses, hybrid teas, floribundas, shrubs, climbers, fragrant varieties, cutting roses, easy-care selections, classics, rosarian favorites, and a few harder-to-find treasures.
With more than 80+ varieties in our growing collection, there's a good chance we can help you find something that fits your garden.
What's the difference between a bare root rose and a potted rose?
A bare root rose is sold while dormant without soil around its roots. Bare root roses are lightweight, easy to plant, and an excellent way to add premium varieties to your garden at the beginning of the growing season.
Our potted roses have already been planted and begun establishing in their containers, making them a great option for gardeners who prefer a more developed plant that's ready to transition into the garden.
Availability and sizes vary by variety and season.
Will every rose be available in every size?
No. Size availability depends on the variety, season, and where each plant is in our growing cycle.
Depending on the rose, you may see options such as:
- Bare Root
- 1 Gallon Nursery Pots (2.8-3 liters)
- 3 Gallon
If a size is unavailable, that doesn't necessarily mean the variety is gone for the season — it may simply be growing into its next stage.
Are your roses good for North Carolina?
Some roses are especially well-suited to North Carolina’s heat, humidity, and disease pressure, while others may require a little more attention to perform their best.
To make choosing easier, our rose collection can be filtered by characteristics such as beginner-friendly, disease resistance, heat tolerance, fragrance, bloom habit, size, and more.
If your priority is an easy-care rose that can better handle our climate, look for varieties marked Beginner Friendly or with higher Disease Resistance ratings.
And if you’ve fallen in love with a slightly fussier rose? We understand that too. Some blooms are worth a little extra effort.
Can you help me choose a rose?
Absolutely.
Whether you're looking for fragrance, repeat blooms, a great cutting flower, something beginner-friendly, a climber for an arbor, or simply "the biggest ruffliest rose you have," we're happy to point you in the right direction.
Preorders & Availability
What does preorder mean?
Preordering allows you to reserve a specific plant or rose before it is ready for pickup or delivery.
We use preorder commitments when making purchasing, growing, and inventory decisions, so your plant is being reserved or ordered with your purchase in mind.
Can I cancel a preorder or special order?
Because preorders, special orders, custom-grown plants, custom sourcing, and bulk purchases are reserved or purchased specifically based on your commitment, these orders may not be canceled and are non-refundable.
If we're unable to fulfill your order due to crop failure, supplier availability, plant quality, weather, or another issue on our end, we'll work with you on an appropriate replacement, later fulfillment, store credit, or refund.
Why do some plants sell out before they're ready?
Plants don't come off an assembly line — and that's part of the fun.
Many of our roses and locally grown plants are purchased or grown in limited quantities. Preordering is the best way to secure a specific variety when availability is limited.
Locally Grown Favorites
What are Locally Grown Favorites?
Our Locally Grown Favorites are plants we don't grow directly on The Rose Cove farm but have selected from trusted local and community growers.
This allows us to offer a broader and more interesting mix of perennials, natives, seasonal plants, and garden favorites while supporting other growers close to home.
Why do Locally Grown Favorites have different cancellation terms?
Unlike plants already growing here on the farm, many Locally Grown Favorites are sourced specifically to fulfill customer orders.
Once an order is placed, we may begin coordinating and purchasing those plants from our growers. For that reason, canceled Locally Grown Favorites are subject to a 25% restocking fee, with the remaining balance refunded to the original payment method.

Locally Grown Favorites, preorders, special orders are subject to a 25% restocking fee.
Can I return a live plant?
Because plants are living and perishable, live plant sales are final once picked up or delivered, except when a plant was damaged, unhealthy, or not the variety ordered at the time it was received.
Please inspect your plants when you receive them.
If something doesn't look right, contact us within 48 hours of pickup or delivery with your order number and a few clear photos.
If we determine there was a quality issue when you received your plant, we'll make it right with an appropriate replacement, store credit, or refund.
My plant looks wilted after bringing it home. Is something wrong?
Maybe not.
Plants aren't always thrilled about moving day.
Transportation and transplanting can cause temporary wilting, yellowing, leaf drop, lost blooms, or an overall appearance of being deeply offended by recent events.
Most healthy plants recover once they're watered appropriately and given time to settle into their new environment.
If you're concerned, send us a photo before giving up on it. We're happy to help you determine whether you're seeing normal transplant stress or something that needs attention.
What happens if my plant dies after I plant it?
Once a plant leaves our care, its success can be affected by watering, drainage, soil, sunlight, planting technique, fertilizer, weather, pests, wildlife, disease, and plenty of other things Mother Nature doesn't ask our permission about.
For that reason, our standard plant purchase does not include long-term replacement coverage for plants lost after planting.
Planting & Care
When should I plant my rose?
Planting recommendations depend on whether your rose is bare root or potted and on current weather conditions.
We'll provide appropriate guidance based on the type of rose you've purchased and the season.
How much sun do roses need?
Most roses perform best with at least six hours of direct sunlight, although individual varieties and locations can vary.
Morning sun is particularly helpful in our humid climate because it helps foliage dry more quickly.
Can roses grow in North Carolina clay soil?
They absolutely can.
Good drainage and proper planting matter more than having picture-perfect soil. Roses can be remarkably adaptable once established.
We recommend improving the planting area appropriately without creating such a dramatically different pocket of soil that roots are reluctant to move beyond the planting hole.
Should I fertilize my new rose immediately?
More is not always better when it comes to a newly planted rose.
The first priority is allowing the root system to establish.
Heavy fertilization too soon can put unnecessary stress on a newly transplanted plant.
Do you offer help after I purchase?
Of course.
One of the benefits of buying from a local nursery is having someone to ask when your plant starts doing something strange.
Send us a message with a few photos and some information about your planting conditions, and we'll do our best to help point you in the right direction.
Ordering & Sourcing
Can you find a plant or rose I don't see on your website?
We’d love to try!
If you're looking for a particular rose, perennial, native plant, or garden favorite, reach out to us.
Through our own growing inventory and relationships with other growers, we may be able to source varieties that aren't currently listed online.
Special sourcing requests are subject to availability and special-order terms.
Do you offer bulk or wholesale purchases?
Yes, depending on availability.
We welcome conversations with landscapers, garden designers, backyard nurseries, community projects, and other growers looking for larger quantities or specific varieties.
Contact us with what you're looking for and we'll let you know what may be possible.
Will your inventory change throughout the season?
Definitely.
We're a working nursery, so availability will change as plants mature, sell, bloom, become seasonally available, or tempt us into bringing home something we hadn't planned on.
Checking the website and following The Rose Cove are the best ways to see what's currently growing, arriving, and coming soon.
